Home Repair Bills

I am getting my air conditioner fixed today and it reminded of something that may be useful to know. When you have someone come out to your house to repair anything (electric, plumbing, etc.) there are some questions that you should always ask. I learned this the hard way many years ago when I overpaid for some electrical work.

1. Trip Charges - ask what they charge for a trip charge. All companies charge something for travel time to and from a job or work site. You also need to know if they are going to charge you twice for a trip charge if they have to come back out a second time to finish or because they had to order parts.

2. Over Time - Not all companies charge overtime, but enough of them do. Always ask what their labor rates are and if they charge overtime. I always schedule service calls in the morning because a lot of companies will charge time and a half for any hours their employees work on the weekends or past 5:00 pm. This can be huge because most of the time the larger portion of the bill is labor. If someone is supposed to be there in the morning and they are running late and want to change the time to late afternoon I always make them reschedule for another day unless it is an emergency.

3. Warranty - check to see if what they repair is under warranty, either through the manufacturer or a home warranty. A lot of times the labor isn't covered under a warranty, but the parts might be.

I learned the hard way when I ended up with an electrical repair bill for $600 and $300 of it was overtime and extra trip charges.

Does anyone have any other good advice about service calls for everyone??

Where have you been all my life?

I must have been living under a rock for the last 40 years because I have never tried Nutella. Can you believe it? We have a new Super Super Walmart (larger than a Super Walmart) and I decided to catch up on grocery shopping yesterday. It is a bad idea to go grocery shopping when you are hungry because you buy 10 times as much stuff as you really needed (and really blow the diet plan). I saw a display of Nutella and decided to try it. IT IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER EATEN!!!

The hazards of recycling

I heard my dogs whining on the porch yesterday. They had dumped out the recycling bins and had been taking everything in the back yard. I found Bear on the back porch with an ice cream bucket stuck to his head. He was by the back door waiting for me to let him in, probably because he couldn't see to find the dog door. Of course, I am mean and made him wait while I took a picture (don't worry they had already torn a hole in the side of the bucket so he was able to breathe). I am going out today to buy recycling bins with lids!

More Vacaton Photos from Colorado

I am finally getting through all of the pictures we took. This one is one of Bear and Bailey traveling in the back seat of the truck

Here is a picture of Ouray, Colorado....my favorite place!

We went hiking and got lost. My husband was really happy to find this sign!!

We got to go to the Ouray 4th of July water fight. They have done this every year since they had horse-drawn fire trucks. It used to be a competition between two mountain towns; Silverton and Ouray. At first I was disappointed because we got there late and we couldn't see through all the people. After the first water fight most people were more than willing to give up the good spots because they were so wet and cold.

This sign isn't worn out from weather...those are bear claw marks all over it.

This is why you have to respect the mountains. This truck went off the road a few weeks ago and crashed into a canyon. No one was hurt and the driver got out before it went down. They still haven't figured out the whole story yet.

The deer in Ouray are pretty aggressive and not really scared of people. They just stand around and stare at you (and pose for pictures).

Bailey spent quite a bit of time smelling these flowers. Of course, right after I took the picture he peed all over them. I like how he kind of blends in with the rocks.

Engineering 101

My husband provides lots of entertainment for the neighborhood. He had two pieces of pipe that were really stuck together so why not just use the truck and the jeep to pull them apart? At least he finally justified the cost of putting a wench on the jeep! It actually worked and he didn't break anything.

Hard Rock 100

The Hard Rock 100 is a 100 mile endurance race in the Colorado mountains, made up mostly of mountain trails. The cut-off time for the race is 48 hours. It is amazing because most of the runners are over 40 years old (and some in their late 60's). When we were in Ouray for vacation a few weeks ago we met some really neat people. I love getting to know people in small towns because they have such interesting and different lives. We got to know Jennifer who ran the Hard Rock 100 and finished! The race started after we left and I wanted to send her something. I finally came up with something this week. I ordered some charms and then made a "hard rock" charm so that I could put together a charm bracelet for her. We are so proud of her for finishing! It is quite an accomplishment. I don't think I could even stay up for 48 hours straight (even in a recliner, watching movies), let alone running & hiking for 100 miles!! Way to go Jennifer! You are an inspiration to all of us!!

My First Doll

My Mom started teaching me to sew when I was five. I started by hand sewing (of course my stitches were loose and 3 inches long). In sixth grade I made my first doll by myself for a school project. I just found this doll in a box when I was cleaning out stuff we have had packed forever. I remember that it took me forever to make it and I had to keep ripping out stitches and starting over. I remember fighting with my Mom because she wanted me to hand embroider the face. I waited until she took a nap, cut out a face from felt pieces and glued them on. Okay, Mom, I am finally admitting this after all these years....the doll would have looked better if I had embroidered the face instead of glued on chunky pieces of felt!

Please put your shirt back on!!

We went to the Yes and Asia concert last night. I hope I can still "rock" when I am that old. The concert was great!

During the concert a bunch of people decided to dance in the isles. I am not sure, but I think they were trying to imitate ballerinas, swans, or butterflies??? Some of the male "dancers" decided to take their shirts off. It would have been pretty interesting, but their beer guts kind of ruined the whole effect. Thank goodness security came by and made them put their shirts back on!!

We're Back!!!

Driving Mrs. Daisy

We are leaving Colorado and driving back home today. My husband always does most of the driving which is great because I catch up on a lot of reading that way. He likes to tell people that he is "Driving Mrs. Daisy" and that he always has to do all the driving, but the truth is that he can't stand to be a passenger....ever!

Bailey and The Rock

Our vacation is almost over and we will be heading back home tomorrow. I pre-posted this, but it is always the same. Every time we start packing the truck to leave the cabin Bailey bolts back up the stairs and sits at the top. He always refuses to come down and we have to climb back up 76 stairs to get him. He is kind of hard to see in the picture, but I am sure he is smiling and laughing at us.

Mining for Gold

We are going to try to visit a few Colorado mines today. There are a lot of them around Ouray. I am hoping that we find some gold so that we can afford to move here in a few years!!!

Box Canyon Falls

I am pre-posting this, but this is where we are supposed to be today, hiking in box canyon falls in Ouray. This is one of the most beautiful places we have ever seen. I will have to find some pictures from last winter, but Ouray is known for its ice climbing park. They run water down the canyon while it freezes which creates frozen waterfalls that people climb.

Ouray Hot Springs

I am pre-posting this, but if everything went as scheduled we would have ran or walked a 10K in Ouray yesterday. I am pretty sure my husband probably ran it and I walked part of it and then hitched my way back. The plan is to spend some time today at the Ouray hot springs pool. This is the first thing you see when drive into town.

Water Fight

Happy 4th of July!! We are going to go to the Ouray 4th of July water fight on Main Street today where they battle it out with fire hoses. I have wanted to see this for a long time. It should be really fun! I have to look up the history of the water fight when I get there, but I think it goes back to when they had horse drawn fire trucks.

I just wanted some Doritos

This happened a while ago, but I smile whenever I see a bag of Doritos. My husband was out of town and I woke up at 2:00 am because I heard a noise in the basement. At first it scared me and then I fully woke up and realized that Bailey wasn't at the foot of the bed. I went down stairs and found him head butting a bag of Doritos that was stuck in the dog door. Our dogs are really small so we have a really small dog door. We had some friends over the night before and they had brought a large bag of Doritos and left it on the counter. Apparently Bailey needed a snack in the middle of the night so he swiped the bag off the counter and was trying to get it to the back yard, but it got stuck in the dog door.
