Wax Seal Peace Sign Necklace Giveaway!

Amy and I have been on-line friends for a while. We have never actually met in person, but have been emailing and working together for several years. She is hosting a giveaway for a wax seal peace sign necklace on her blog "The Preppy Pink Olive". Just visit her blog for the details; the giveaway ends 10-24-09. Thanks Amy!!

Soldering Class!

I took a soldering class last weekend to learn how to make pendants. It was so much fun!! I really want to make a bunch of larger ones for Christmas ornaments so that I can tie them on gifts this year. If you want to learn how to make these just check out any of the bead shops in your area. Some of them may offer a class in soldering. I bought a book, but ended up making a big burnt mess out of the solder....the class was much easier!!

Ceramic Bead Book Giveaway

I am still cleaning out our book shelves. I am lucky enough to have two copies of Jennifer Jangles Ceramic Bead Book so I am giving one away this week. To enter, just leave a comment on this post letting me know what types of beads are your favorite (of course if you are an obsessed bead freak like me you LOVE them all....there is no such thing as a bad bead). The contest ends at midnight on Thursday 10-22-09 and I will draw a winner on Friday. I started following her blog last year and love all of her designs. If you like to make or collect ceramic beads you will love her blog and Etsy shop "Jennifer Jangles Blog". I think it is really neat that she wrote her own book too!!

Run Forrest Run!!

This weekend was the Kansas City marathon; my husband ran the half marathon. He did pretty good on his time, One hour and 52 minutes. I think he did really well considering his latest training program. He only did a few long runs and ate ice cream EVERY night for the last two months. I only had one picture turn out because it was pretty dark at 6:00 am. They had about 10,000 runners Saturday and it was a lot of fun to watch (and drink coffee on the side lines).

23 years!!

Today was our first date 23 years ago! I met my husband through my twin brother. I was visiting my brother at college and had brought him a bunch of chocolate chip cookies that I made. I met Brian that weekend and on the way home I stopped by the grocery store and picked up more cookie supplies. I was actually dating someone else at the time, but I swung by his house on the way home from the grocery store and dumped him (I didn't think...I just did it). I then went home, baked a bunch more cookies, and mailed them to Brian....and we have been together ever since! It really is true "The way to a man's heart is through is stomach"!!!

Name the Necklace Winner(s)

We actually have two winners for this contest. My husband judged all the entries last night. He thought that two entries described the necklace the best. "Prep-E-Girl" said "Generations" and "Jana" said "Generations of Love". The necklace is meant to be made with heart charms of someone's children and/or grandchildren. The name of the new necklace is now "Generations of the Heart". Thank you to everyone who entered the contest! We really enjoyed reading all the entries.

Rotten Eggs!

Have you ever wondered how they make the letters and details on silver black? Most jewelers use Liver of Sulfer, and it stinks really bad! Just like rotten eggs. On the days that I use it my workshop the whole room smells like something died in it!I am sure people wonder what I am doing in there when they smell it.

Here is a picture of silver after it has been tumbled for a long time in a vibratory tumbler to remove the rough edges; holes have also been drilled in each pendant (my husband's job).

The silver is then cleaned and placed in a liver of sulfer solution until it turns black:

This is what it looks like after it comes out of the Liver of Sulfer and is rinsed off and dried:

The next step is to buff all of the excess black off the silver. The black will remain in the recesses so that the letters are dark and any other details are antiqued. The silver is then polished.

If you have silver pieces that have been oxidised (antiqued) you have to be careful when you clean them. If they are put into a really harsh cleaning fluid it can remove all or some of the black. The best way to clean oxidised silver is to gently clean it in warm soapy water while rubbing it with your fingers to remove any dirt and grime. Rinse well, and then finish with a jewelry cleaning and polishing cloth.

Flowers....for ME?????

I thought I got flowers yesterday, but they were really for my husband. My neighbor sent them because he fixed their car when they were stranded. I wish they wouldn't have done that. There have been too many times that we had to rely on neighbors and it would be nice if we could pay it back even if it is a different neighbor. When my husband was deployed I really counted on the neighbor's a few times.....like when I got a flat tire, or tripped over Bailey and broke my foot, or when my fence blew down in a snow storm while I was on crutches (Bailey loved that one because he was able to escape twice undetected).
